The Wertzone on The Reef

Just discovered s rather spiffing review of The Reef. Sadly, I have very few copies left and no plans to reprint at the moment, but the book is currently available in the following Waterstones' stores.

Before Cthulhumas…

… a term which I've seen sprinkled across the interweb (notably on Gary Greenwood's blog and PS's new-site) I've just realised that the BFS are inviting recommendations for the award's long-list next year – from now until end of January 2009. Such recommendations are open, but only members of the society and/or FantasyCon can actually vote.

Therefore, in an attempt at self-promotion, the following Pendragon titles are eligible for recommendation:

Best Novel (the August Derleth Award)
The Reef by Mark Charan Newton

Best Short Fiction
Late Runners by Gary McMahon
Nothing is Forever by Stuart Young

Best Novella
Gingerbread by Paul Finch and Brian Finch
The Mill by Mark West
Heads by Gary McMahon
Bliss by Stuart Young
The Narrows by Simon Bestwick
The Pumping Station by Paul Finch

Best Anthology

We Fade to Grey ed. Gary McMahon
Gingerbread: The Fantasy2008 Pendragon Sampler ed. Christopher C Teague

Best Artist
Darius Hicks
Mark West

Best Small Press
*cough*

Looking at this list, it does seem like I'm a fully paid-up member of the Finch/McMahon/Young fan-club but hey! I can't help but use writers I like. :)

Anyway, I'd be pretty damn ecstatic if The Reef and We Fade to Grey win their respective awards… but the field is pretty damn open this year…

In other news, visited the Big Smoke earlier this month for the BFS Christmas Open Night and had a blast – as usual; took a couple of shots, though not a lot since I neglected to bring any spare batteries:

Also met a few bods from the SFX Forum which was an unexpected surprise.

Anyway, enough for now… have a splendid festivities – regardless of your indoctrination – and I shall see you back you in January with Triquorum all rearing to go…

Though naturally these two could be from anyone, who am I too disagree?

The Reef – a new review

Perused the ol' net a day or so ago, and came across this review of Mark Charan Newton's debut courtesy of Sci-Fi-Online – and it's a cracking write-up:

"[D]ebut novels are usually a bit of a hit or miss affair… What is surprising about The Reef is the almost effortless and accomplished way that Newton injects a level of literate prose, characterisation and plot development usually seen in a more seasoned author… his prose a delight to read but the book is a creation which balances well its fantasy credentials with a deeper examination of relationships – both between man and his environment and man and his fellow creatures. (10/10)"

So, what are you waiting for – order a copy today. You know it makes sense. :)

Reviews/News

It's been a little while, but a couple of things have happened:

The Reef was reviewed in the Guardian a couple of weeks ago – which is terrific news:

"Newton treads new ground in his attempt to bring literary concerns to the fantasy genre. The result is a sometimes uneven path between fantastical exoticism and the more mundane aspects of the mainstream, but a path nevertheless worth taking."

It continues to sell well at Waterstones (though I presume so since the wholesaler, Gardners, sends me new orders practically every day…)

No-Man and Other Tales has also been reviewed at Zone-SF, and again it is rather splendid:

"… living proof that Richards is getting better and better as a storyteller and a creator of well carved characters. Which is good news not only for the fans of novellas but for any lover of solid and entertaining dark fiction."

Copies still available, and you know where to buy a copy of either – or both. :)

First Confirmed Sighting

Way up in Glasgow, on Argyle Street, confirmed by Richard Wright.

So, there's still time people – if you want your chance of winning a signed free copy of this book – and from the word on the street, this first printing will not only sell out fast, but will become a very collectable item.

Mind you, are there any further Waterstones stores than Glasgow? ;-)

The Reef: first review…

… and it's a damn good one, courtesy of review-blogger, Graeme.

Not only does it pass the "train journey test" but it's also "a more than worthy debut from an author that I'll be looking out for in the future…"

I've been reliably informed that copies are on the shelves in Waterstones' stores, but if you'd like a signed copy (of which there are only a handful left) then buy it now.

Or soon.

Set sail for The Reef…

… though in hindsight, the analogy could be all wrong since the books have arrived – proof being the photograph.

Looks rather lovely, doesn't it? Well, don't forget to buy your copy – and just a reminder: if you are going to Eastercon, then make sure you're around on Friday evening for the official launch (as part of Ian Whates' BSFA do.)

The author, Mark Charan Newton, will be on hand with an eager right-hand to sign your copy there and then.

It's Competition Corner!

In my memory of my childhood and the impending distribution of a multitude of copies of Mark Charan Newton's debut dark fantasy novel, The Reef, via Waterstones I thought I'd start a little competition – a little bit of fun and frivolity…

From it's publication (26th March) and until end of June whomever can find a copy of said book in a branch the furthest away (from me) and provide documentary proof of it's location then the eventual winner will receive a signed copy gratis.

Oh, and the publisher's decision is final.

So, if you're up there in John O'Groats or down there in Land's End then keep your eyes peeled…

EDIT: Egad! it's everywhere!
